Police officer dies in road accident at KKIA

A ZAMBIAN police officer has died in a road traffic accident that occurred today, near Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.

Constable Raphael Mupatayi, 28, was riding a motorbike when he collided with a Mercedes Benz driven by Dorothy Mulenga Kumwenda. Mupatayi was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Another officer, Constable John Mulenga, 29, who was riding with Mupatayi, sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical attention.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said in a statement that preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Mercedes Benz failed to yield the right of way to the motorbike

“A case docket has been opened, and thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident are currently underway,” Hamoonga disclosed.

The Zambia Police Service expressed condolences to the families of those involved and urged all road users to adhere to traffic regulations.

“The Inspector General of Police and the entire police service extend their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Constable Raphael Mupatayi during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are also with Constable John Mulenga for a swift and full recovery,” said Hamoonga.
