Schoolgirls drown in Copperbelt dam

TWO young friends, Bathsheba Musaka, 12, and Grace Namonje, 14, tragically lost their lives in a drowning accident on Tuesday in the Kafulafuta Dam of Masaiti District, Copperbelt Province.

The sixth-grade students at Koti ni Eden School in the Shilashi area reportedly left school premises around 14:00 hours.

Bathsheba planned to visit a friend in Kampundu Village before accompanying Grace home to Saili Village.

According to Copperbelt police commanding officer Peacewell Mweemba, the girls decided to take a shortcut across the dam via a narrow pathway commonly used as a crossing point.

“As they were crossing the dam, they drowned after failing to cross,” he stated.

Community members who witnessed the incident attempted to rescue the girls but sadly found them already deceased.

Police arrived at the scene and confirmed no signs of physical injuries on the bodies. “The bodies had some foam coming from their nose and mouth,” added Mweemba

The grandmother of the girls, Offa Ednah, reported the incident to the authorities. The bodies have been transferred to St. Theresa’s Mission Hospital Mortuary.
