THE Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has fired a warning shot against the spread of fake news in social media.
They’re urging everyone to ditch the “share first, fact-check later” habit and be responsible users of social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.
A flood of misinformation like digital weeds is spreading through social media, and ZICTA is worried about the potential damage that several platforms have circulating either targeted at individuals or corporate entities.
In a statement issued by Hanford Chaaba, manager Corporate Communications, ZICTA will be launching new initiatives to promote responsible digital behavior, ensuring everyone can navigate the online world safely.
“The inappropriate usage of digital platforms for purposes such as spreading fake news or sharing unverified and potentially malicious information could present significant risks that may lead to severe social and economic consequences.”
Chaaba urged all to contribute to making the digital environment safe for all users of ICT product and services including social media as mandated by law.
“We will continue to implement various initiatives aimed at encouraging the responsible usage of digital platforms such as social media,” pledged ZICTA
