GRAPHEL Musamba’s men were on Thursday night made to run for their salaries as they exhibited Olympic sprints surpassing Hussein Bolt in chasing a dangerous criminal believed to be behind a spate of crimes in Lusaka’s Roma and surrounding areas.
The chase became a night marathon as the police officers ran after the criminal like Chipolopolo’s return at the Africa Cup of Nations depended on it.
According to authorities the suspect hailing from Chazanga is linked to a series of aggravated robberies and rape cases in the Roma and surrounding areas of Lusaka.
Acting on a tip from an informant, officers on Thursday spotted a vehicle believed to be associated with the crimes – a white Toyota Allion BBA 9422 at 19:00 hours in Chipata Maplot.
After a brief chase, they abandoned the car, which reported stolen and the suspect scattered in the heat dash like popping popcorns in different directions on their feet.
Alas! their sweat paid off as they managed to apprehend the suspect whose identity was withheld to facilitate further investigations.s apprehended and the stolen vehicle recovered.
During questioning, the suspect spilled the beans confessing his involvement in multiple assaults and led police to his residence, in Chazanga where a cache of stolen items was found.
Recovered items include laptops, a POS machine, wallets, machetes, and student identification.
Investigations have linked the suspect to several reported cases, including attacks on Shoprite employees, a woman who identified a stolen coat, and a couple robbed on January 15.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the arrest stating the suspect remains in custody while the police were actively searching for his accomplices.
“The Zambia Police Service urges the public to remain vigilant and cooperative in providing any additional information that may aid in solving related cases,” Hamoonga added.
