Vandal shoots ZESCO officer during anti-vandalism operation

A ZESCO Limited security officer, Inspector Misheck Siakambala has been seriously injured after he was shot by a suspected vandal during an early morning joint patrol with the Zambia Police Service today.

According to statement by ZESCO Corporate Affairs manager Caristo Chitamfya the incident occured near Lukanda B Primary School in Kapiri Mposhi District where ZESCO security personnel and Zambia Police
Service officers were conducting an operation to secure an armored cable.

It is reported that the amoured cable was vandalised on December 30, 2023 and Security Inspector Siakambala, Security Sergeant Petronella, Kapumpa and Inspector Simon Zimba of the Zambia Police, went to check it out.

During the operation, they came across the vandals and in bid to stop and apprehend them the suspect violently attacked Inspector Siakambala, who was attempting to disarm him.

During the struggle, the suspect pulled the trigger, indiscriminately shooting at the officers.

Inspector Siakambala sustained gunshot wounds to the neck and abdomen.

He was initially treated at Mshimbili Hospital in Kapiri Mposhi and later referred to Kabwe General Hospital, where he is currently admitted.

The suspect found in the act of vandalising and stealing ZESCO cables was apprehended while his accomplices managed to escape.

The captured suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and has been admitted to Mshimbili Hospital.

Chitamfya said a manhunt has been launched for the other suspects.
