THE Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has halted the sale of maize to millers but has instead advised them to buy direct from farmers.
The agency has emphasized the need for millers countrywide to reduce their maize dependence on FRA by ensuring that they stock adequate maize during this year’s on-going crop marketing season in order to sustain their business operations.
This is according to a statement released by FRA Public Relations Coordinator, John Chipandwe who noted that their has been a stable supply of maize to millers on the local market from FRA and farmers.
“The Agency has observed that despite the on-going crop marketing season and the stable supply of maize on the local market, some millers have continued making maize purchase applications to the Agency.
In this regard, the Agency wishes to notify millers that it is no longer selling maize and further wishes to urge them to buy the commodity (maize) directly from farmers or from the open market while the commodity is still available,” said Chipandwe.
According to Chipandwe, FRA is aware that players in the milling sector are buying maize from the local market during this year’s crop marketing season which is currently in progress.
And as a result of this, the Agency does not expect any millers to be making maize purchase applications.
Chipandwe further urged millers to continue buying maize from the open market from farmers that have harvested the commodity and offering it for sell.
“Further, the Agency wishes to remind millers that they are a key stakeholder that play a critical role in sustaining national food security and should therefore always buy adequate maize stocks to sustain their business operations instead of depending on national strategic food reserves,” said Chipandwe.
