Nalumango links climate change effects to peace, security

VICE-PRESIDENT Mutale Nalumango has emphasised the need for the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) to incorporate the impact of climate change on peace and security.

Vice-President Nalumango said peace and security, without factoring-in climate change effects, are a recipe for disasters of higher proportion.

 

She said this during the 18th edition of COMESA committee of foreign affairs ministers’ meeting in Lusaka yesterday.

The COMESA foreign affairs ministers met to discuss matters of regional democracy, peace, and security, ahead of the 22nd summit of heads of State and government, to be held tomorrow at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre – Kenneth Kaunda wing – in Lusaka.

“The intensity and unexpected heat waves, droughts and floods experienced in some member States in central, eastern and southern Africa, are a clear sign that the effects, are a recipe for disasters of higher proportion with greater impacts such as food and nutrition insecurity, displacements and infrastructure damage leading to huge financial losses,” Vice-President Nalumango said.

She said, according to recent study by the notre-dame global adaptation index, nine out of 21 COMESA member States, are among the 20 most vulnerable countries globally, due to climate change.

“Out of these, seven have been involved in some conflicts over the last decade,” she said.

“I therefore commend COMESA secretariat on its efforts to strengthen its climate change programmes and, especially those that link climate to peace and security.”

Meanwhile, Vice-President Nalumango highlighted the achievements made by COMESA in the region while noting the need for regional trade body to intervene on conflicts beyond the region, as instability across Africa or anywhere retains the same effects.

Vice-President Nalumango said in the absence of peace, no meaningful economic development could be attained.
