POLICE in Mushindamo, North-Western Province, have arrested a 17-year-old teenager suspected to be mentally disturbed for defiling a three-year-old girl.
The incident happened on Sunday around 08:00 hours.
North-Western Province police commanding officer Dennis Moola confirmed the incident in a statement yesterday and identified the suspect as Joseph Shalupai.
Mr Moola said the matter was reported to the police by Ruth Mangenda, of Lamba village, on behalf of her granddaughter.
“The victim was playing with her friends along the roadside when the suspect approached them,” he said.
“The children ran away as he is believed to be mentally unstable. The suspect, however, managed to get hold of the victim and took her into a nearby bush, where he had carnal knowledge of her.”
Mr Moola said one of the children, who is the older brother of the victim, went and informed the grandmother about what had happened.
“The grandmother quickly rushed and found the suspect coming out of a nearby bush [and he] ran away upon seeing her,” he said.
“She entered the bush where the suspect came from and found the girl lying on the ground with her dress pulled up, with blood on her private parts and dress.”
