GOVERNMENT has assured the nation that the spillage of diesel at the Tazama Pipeline will not significantly impact the supply of the product on the Zambian market.

In a statement today, Minisiter of Energy Peter Kapala says Zambia has approximately 52.8 million litres of low sulphur diesel in storage, which is able to last for 15 days.

The 1,710 Kilometres TAZAMA pipeline in Mbeya, Tanzania was damaged on Monday, due to some road construction works which were being conducted by authorities in that country, leading to a leakage of low sulphur diesel destined for Ndola.

Kapala said one million litres was lost in leakage and that represents about 0.9 per cent of the stocks of low sulphur diesel in storage in Dar es Salaam.

With the current Zambian market price for low sulphur diesel, as at May, the loss translates to K24.6 million.

Meanwhile, Kapala stated that the damage on the pipeline was temporarily clamped by a full maintenance team dispatched from Dar es Salaam, that arrived at the site yesterday.

“We wish to re-assure the public that full repair works will be completed by the end of the day on Wednesday 17th May 2023. Afterwards, environmental clean-up works and site restoration will commence,” Kapala stated.

“Noting that the pipeline will commence operations immediately after the repairs are completed and the adequate stocks available in storage, there will be no disruptions in the supply of low Sulphur diesel.”

Kapala added that the product being transported through the pipeline was insured against such losses.

“Other costs such as the cost of repairs, mobilisation of manpower and equipment, supervisory and administrative costs will be worked out after repairs are completed and demobilisation is done,” stated Kapala.
