A PROMINENT Zambian, Alfred Sampa, 46, has joined the long list of Zambians being murdered by South African criminals in that country’s crime-infested cities, especially Johannesburg.
He was shot in central Johannesburg yesterday.
Sampa, an entrepreneur who used to supply major supermarkets around Zambia with fresh fruits and vegetables, breathed his last at the hands of some South African criminals yesterday.
What seemed to be a normal day of running around to look for orders for Sampa, quickly turned into a scene hysteria as a vehicle started trailing him while he was in a taxi he booked on his way to City Deep market where he went to buy his merchandise.
Within a short space of time, the criminals utilised the accelerator, managing to catch up with them untill they overtook Sampa and his driver.
The assailants managed to halt the taxi, opened fire at Sampa and sped off, leaving him for dead.
Zambia’s High Commissioner to South Africa, first secretary for press and public relations Tamara Nyirenda said in a statement that the incident happened yesterday around 12:30 hours.
“After the assailants sped off, the taxi driver is said to have rushed Mr. Sampa to Southrand Hospital in Johannesburg where he eventually died,” Nyirenda said.
Beaullah Sampa, the wife to the deceased confirmed the death to Zambia High Commission in Pretoria yesterday and further stated that the matter had been reported to in South Africa.
Zambia’s acting High Commissioner to South Africa Inonge Mwenya said the mission will keenly follow the updates from the investigations being conducted by the South African Police as she conveyed a message of condolences to the bereaved family.
