23-YEAR-OLD man of Mbala, Northern Province, has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 86-year- old stroke-stricken grandfather whom he suffocated using plastic bags after inserting plastics in his mouth.
Michael Simukoko is said to have allegedly murdered his grandfather, Jailos Simukoko, on Monday morning.
The two were staying with Samuel Sinzumwa, 22, who was taking care of the grandfather from the time he had a stroke in December last year.
The grandfather was in his bedroom sleeping when Michael left the house, leaving him with Sinzumwa, who prepared breakfast and fed him before he left to wash plates outside.
Michael is then alleged to have returned home and entered the house before he came out and asked Sinzumwa to call their uncle so that he could find out where Jailos’ car keys were.
Northern Province police commanding officer Gloria Mulele said Sinzumwa called Billington Nyimbi and told him that Michael was looking for the car keys.
Ms Mulele said Nyimbi requested that he speak to Michael on the phone, but midway through the conversation with the uncle he dropped the call and ordered Sinzumwa not to enter the grandfather’s bedroom.
But Sinzumwa became suspicious and went to check on the grandfather in his bedroom, where he found him dead.
The victim was found wrapped with a plastic around his head and hands tied with a chitenge,” he said.
Ms Mulele said Sinzumwa phoned Nyimbi and narrated what he saw.
The uncle went to the house and found the old man in the same position that Sinzumwa found him.
Nyimbi removed the plastic from Jailos’ head and observed that some plastics were also inserted into his mouth.
Ms Mulele said the family reported the matter to the police, which led to the arrest of the suspect.
The motive behind the killing remains unknown but investigations are continuing.
