LUMEZI independent member of parliament Munir Zulu yesterday commissioned a grader for the constituency, and praised the UPND government for the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Once the UPND presented its first national budget for 2022 in October 2021, CDF was increased from a paltry K1.6 million to K25.7 million per constituency.

For 2023, CDF was increased to K28.3 million per constituency.

From the K25.7 million for 2022, Lumezi constituency bought a brand new grader, at over K2 million, that will be used to work on feeder roads in the rural constituency of Eastern Province.

According to Lumezi town council public relations officer Irvine Muyumbwa, Zulu was on hand to commission the recently procured grader, worth K2,030, 000.

Zulu said through the increased CDF allocation, desks are being procured in schools and that some mothers’ shelters are under construction in Lumezi.

“CDF was increased from K25.7 million last year to K28.3 million this year. We thank government. Desks are being procured and mothers’ shelters are being built. Our priority is development in Lumezi,” Zulu said.

He noted that soon, schools and mothers’ shelters which are currently under construct will be commissioned in Lumezi while boreholes will be drilled, using part of the CDF, to address challenges related to access of drinking water in the district.

Meanwhile, Zulu said people in Lumezi have for a long time been crying for roads and that the new grader will service all areas of Lumezi.

He added that a tractor loader backerhoe (TLB) will soon be procured as part of earth-moving equipment required.

At the same event, Lumezi town council chairperson, Oliver Mwale said with most roads being impassable in the district, the grader will open up the road network, for the benefit of the people.

For Lumezi district commissioner, Jimmy Phiri, the procurement of such machinery, using CDF, is the first of its kind in Lumezi.

Chamtowa ward UPND councillor Davies Mwanza said all the 11 ward councillors in Lumezi constituency supports the decision to buy a grader, noting that it is a milestone achievement.
