Mutati mutating in Lunte

FELIX Mutati, the Minister of Technology and Science, yesterday mutated to where his political journey started from – Lunte district in Northern Province.

Mutati was Lunte Constituency member of parliament from 2001 to 2016.

He is now in Parliament by way of a presidential nomination.

After attending to what was on his to-do list, while in Lupososhi district, Mutati did not think of driving or flying out to Lusaka to sit in an air-conditioned office at Maxwell House (where the Ministry of Technology and Science is housed) in Long Acres.

The minister, instead headed to the pristine, tall-treed Lunte, where he performed worthwhile assignments.

To show that they miss Mutati, who finds it easier to flash smiles than to frown, the locals composed an abrupt but charming hymn for the veteran minister.

The song was titled Mutati uwaile abwela (Mutati who went has returned).

As the singing was on, others saw an opportunity to make use of their Smart phones and captured selfie with an affable Mutati.

Perhaps one of the reasons Mutati is celebrated in Lunte is that during his tenure, a huge project – Lunte Girls’ Technical Secondary School – was constructed.

Yesterday, Mutati was at Lubushi Minor Seminary in Lunte where he handed over four computers to the school.

The minister later visited Lunte Girls’ and donated four computers.

“Lunte Girls is a project that gives me peace whenever I remember and you stood a chance to break the myth that girls belong in the kitchen alone with your 98 per cent pass rate,” Mutati said.

He added that improving the technical learning for pupils is vital in shaping the girls for global competition in technology and that the quality of education, which is already high at the school, can be lifted higher.

A Grade 11 pupil, Chileleko Shamenda, gave a vote of thanks to Mutati, over the donated computers.

Chileleko highlighted some challenges which the school is grappling with, among them poor mobile network connectivity, lack of school furniture, lack of transport, among others.

In response, Mutati said a network tower shall be erected in the area so that the computers can be of use.

He also offered to help the school to upgrade the science lab and to procure furniture for the school’s dining room.

“This school is my project of passion. I am here to plant a seed of greatness! Girls, well done; you are making us happy with your great performance and we will ensure that you are fully equipped for the battle of knowledge,” said Mutati.

“To our parents, please napapata, do not marry off these girls. Leave them to learn, for the nation depends on them.”

Lunte Girls’ Technical Secondary School currently has 577 pupils and 35 teachers.

In attendance were Lunte district commissioner Joseph Chilandu, Lunte District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Stephen Kachiliko and Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) vice-president Leonard Hikaumba.

Meanwhile, Mutati donated a computer to Lunte’s chief Chitoshi of the Lungu people.

The computer donation is meant to make the chief an ambassador of echnology in the district.

“I promise to be an ambassador here and show a girl child that they can change the world with technology and not only with a pot,” said chief Chitoshi.

“Thank you my son for remembering home; only a few can. May God bless you for this gesture.”
