A NINE year old boy of Lusaka’s Kabanana compound, who was in a critical condition after his mother poisoned him and two of his siblings aged three and seven, has been discharged.
According to reports, Mercy Kabungo, 31 of Kabanana compound’s Mai Chola area had a dispute with the husband over her gambling habits which had plunged the family into debt.
However, instead of changing her ways, she decided to join her ancestors and take her three children along, on her fatal journey.
One child has survived the poisoning while his two siblings died and the mother later hanged herself.
Zambia Police Service assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the deaths but said the police are yet to establish the motive behind the deaths.
He said the incident occured 17:30 hours on Tuesday.
“Brief facts are that thr deceased mother sent her 17 year-old niece to go and buy medicine claiming one of the children was sick. When she (niece) came back, she found the children gasping for air,” stated Chilabi.
“The niece then rushed to inform the neighbours, who acted in quick response and organised for transport to rush the children to the hospital where the two female children identified as Hope Mbewe aged seven years, Nathan Mbewe aged were pronounced dead upon arrival.”
Chilabi added that after the the nice to the late Kabungo saw the children failing to breath properly, Kabungo went at the backyard and found a tree where she hanged herself.
He said the other child, Sipho Mbewe, who was in a critical condition, has been discharged while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary, awaiting postmortem.
Chilabi said investigations into the matter have been investigated.
