Congolese riot against Zesco

ZANIS – IRATE Congolese residents at the Mokambo Border staged a riot in protest of Zesco Limited’s power interruption today.
The protesters burnt tyres and through missiles of various kinds in the process smashed the windscreen of one a Power Tools passenger bus, enroute to Nakonde using the pedicle road.
ZANIS reports that Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Sharon Zulu in an interview said the bus, registration number BCA 7848 was pounced on by irate Congolese nationals at the Mokambo border.
“The Congolese nationals were protesting a decision by Zambia’s Electricity Supplying and Distributing Company-, ZESCO to cut power supply to the Mokambo border on the Congo side.
She said Zesco has been supplying power to Mokambo DRC but due to non-payment of electricity bills by a Congolese Company, SNEL, an agent of Zesco Mufulira cut off the power supply.
Zulu said the action angered the Congolese nationals at the border who resorted to protesting after going for three days without power.
She said the irate Congolese nationals burnt tyres on the road and threw stones in different directions targeting motor vehicles.
Zulu added that it is out of this riotous behavior that the Power Tools bus had its rear windscreen shattered.
“So far, the situation has calmed down and no casualties apart from the damages reported. The Zesco management Mufulira are yet to see the way forward to resolve the matter” she said.
