THE Subordinate Court in Mumbwa has sentenced a 32-year-old man who was caught with a pangolin skin and 44 kilograms of illegal bushmeat to five years imprisonment with hard labour.
According to Court records, Fredy Sifego, a farmer from Chitamba Nkumazhiba area in Mumbwa district was apprehended by officers from the Department of National Parks on 21 December 2021.
He was found in possession of 44 kilograms of dry Roan Sable antelope meat, which he intended to sell, and the skin of a pangolin.
He did not have lawful authority to possess either.
Following his arrest, Sifego was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a protected animal, contrary to section 130(1) of the Zambia Wildlife Act No. 14 of 2015.
When the matter came up, the Court sentenced Sifego to five years imprisonment on each count.
The sentences will run concurrently so he will serve a total of five years.
The Zambia Wildlife Act No. 14 of 2015 lists both sable antelopes and pangolins as animals under strict regulatory control to further their survival.
The consumption of illegal bushmeat has been linked to outbreaks of diseases like Anthrax and Ebola.
In 2017, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife in partnership with Wildlife Crime Prevention launched a behavior change campaign dubbed This Is Not A Game.
The campaign highlights the dangers posed by illegal bushmeat trade which include the contraction of zoonotic diseases and lengthy prison sentences such as the one Sifego will be serving.
The DNPW thus encourage Zambians to purchase legal Zambian game meat from accredited suppliers across the country.
