THREE Grade 10 pupils and one Grade 12 of Nanga High School in Mazabuka have drowned
in a water-filled ditch as they went through cadet drills in the late afternoon of yesterday.
Several other pupils from the same school were part of the training but survived.
A fellow pupil who was in charge of the training has since been arrested and is currently in police custody although their identity has been withheld.
The incident has left the pupils of the boarding school traumatised and parents worried.
Police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale has confirmed the incident and identified the Grade 10 pupils as 16-year olds Lewis Sindembi and Vincent Simfukwe as well as
Ezila Mweemba aged 14 while Peter Chibabe aged 18, a Grade 12 was the fourth victim.
According to Mwale, the incident happened near the school between 16:00 hours and 17:00 hours yesterday.
“Brief facts of the incident are that the Four pupils were among other Nanga High School Cadets who were doing some training in an old gravel pit filled with water when they failed to swim,” Mwale told Kalemba in a statement.
He added; “Police and Fire Brigade Officers rushed to the scene and managed to retrieve the body of Lewis Sindembi around 20:00 hours while the three other bodies have been retrieved today around 06:00 hours”.
Upon retrieval, the bodies of the deceased boys were all been deposited in Mazabuka General Hospital Mortuary to await postmortem.
“The Cadet who was In-Charge of the training and Four others are currently held in Police custody,” stated Mwale.
