BIOCARBON Partners (BCP) has embarked on the implementation of the Luangwa community forest project in Senior Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamambo II’s Chiefdom of Chongwe district aimed at sustaining forests and wildlife reserves as well as enhancing the livelihood of people in the area.
A representative from the organization, Robson Mweene stated that residents will be accorded an opportunity to harvest carbon from trees which the organization will in turn sell to stakeholders enabling communities to earn income.
Mweene disclosed that BCP has already conducted a feasibility study of target groups and proposed forest where the project is set to be implemented and will soon engage community members around the area to educate them on how they will participate in the project.
He said this during a District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) meeting in Chongwe held to introduce the Luangwa community forest project to government heads of departments and various stakeholders in Chongwe.
Mweene said the initiative will provide a sustainable solution to the challenge of illicit cutting down of trees for charcoal which contributes to climate change and distruction of the area’s eco system.
“Once people realise how much money they are able to earn through harvesting carbon emissions from forest, it will be easier for them to start conserving trees because they will have an alternative source of income other than charcoal burning,”
“Through this project, we expect our forest to be able to thrive while giving people enough income to sustain their lives,” Mr. Mweene said.
Mweene disclosed that the initiative has proved to be successful in most areas where it is being implemented
He revealed that the project which is currently being implemented in 15 Chiefdoms with Senior Chieftainess Nkomeshya’s Chiefdom becoming the 16th covers over 1000 hectares of forests and a total of 1, 197 households as well as 7,000 beneficiaries earned income through the project
Mweene cited Chief Shikabeta’s chiefdom were the community earned K6 million and Lwembe community which earned K14 million in 2021 from carbon sales under the initiative.
He added that BCP is also promoting the use of alternative energy solutions such as gas to curb deforestation.
Mweene assured all stakeholders in the district that the organization will ensure that local community members select their own structures which will spearhead the project.
Meanwhile, Chongwe District Commissioner (DC) Dr. Evans Lupiya commended BCP for selecting the district as a beneficiary of the project.
Dr. Lupiya described the project as being a mitigation of climate change through sustainable conservation of forests while uplifting the lives of local communities.
He said the project has come at the right time when government is working towards ensuring that all activities are in line with the county’s greening the economy promotion.
He urged all stakeholders in the district to work with BCP as each of them has an important role to play in the implementation process of the project.
