UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says the COVID-19 pandemic should not be weaponised to disadvantage opposition political parties ahead of the August 12 general polls.

President Edgar Lungu yesterday ordered Police to deal with people gathering huge poltical crowds in breach of COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

In reaction, Hichilema says his party will ensure that all members mask up and adhere to set health guidelines aimed at preventing the further spread of the pandemic while campaigning.

Speaking on Hot FM’s ‘Beyond the Headlines’ programme, Hichilema said Zambia should adopt best practices from countries such as Malawi, Uganda, and the United States of America who conducted successful elections amid the COVID pandemic.

Hichilema accused the ruling Patriotic Front of trying, by all means, to weaponise the pandemic to bar the opposition from conducting campaigns yet they have been holding mega rallies throughout the country.

And Patriots for Economic Progress leader Sean Tembo says he disappointed with what he terms as “double standards being exhibited by President Edgar Lungu on the issue of election campaigns”.

Tembo has advised the opposition to ignore the Presidential pronouncement on COVID-prevention measures enforcement by the Police and the Ministry of Health.
