A GROUP of six criminals in Chipata District of Eastern Province have been reported to have grabbed the dreaded AK47 Assault Rifle with 20 rounds of ammunition from a Zambia Police Service officer.
According to a narration by insiders to the matter, Inspector Joseph Banda, 47, was armed with the weapon of war to protect Lutembwe Dam when, at about 21:00 hours, six men dressed in blue work suites entered his guard zone.
Inspector Banda did not order them to stop but allowed them near him.
Immediately the criminals got near the cop, they drew their machetes and hacked Inspector Banda and grabbed his firearm without giving him chance to fire even a warning shot from the 20 bullets in his lethal firearm.
A private security guard who was in the company of Banda was spared from machetes and was just just tied up instead.
In confirming the incident, Eastern Province Commissioner of Police Geza Lungu said the officer had been discharged from hospital and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
