CORRUPTION is often a by-product of power, says Socialist Party president Fred M’membe.
In an article titled “power and corruption,” Dr M’membe said power is power.
He said perhaps the most important struggle for someone in power is the struggle against themselves, the struggle for self-restraint.
“That could well be one of the most difficult things,” Dr M’membe said.
“Corruption is often a by-product of power. To effectively fight against corruption, and even against the abuse of prerogatives, one needs to have a very well-developed and strong conscience.”
He added that he has seen people become conceited and use power incorrectly.
“The tendency to use power incorrectly is something I have seen a lot in this country, at all levels,” said Dr M’membe.
