CORRUPTION is unlikely to end with the change of government on August 12 because politicians are not the only corrupt people in Zambia, Community Action Against Corruption (CAAC) has observed.

In a statement, CAAC chief executive officer

Brightone Tembo stated that the current state of corruption in Zambia was likely to increase regardless of which political party won the forthcoming elections.

Tembo said the organisation’s observation was based on the lack of a clear program of action designed to tackle corruption in Zambia by the political parties.

“All the political parties are just giving the lip service assurance of corruption fight, without showing the people, strategies and mechanism drafted to help combat corruption in the country,” Tembo stated.

“Corruption is a systematic problem in Zambia which has now found residence in the minds of so many Zambians,” Tembo added.

He said since politicians were no longer the only corrupt people, it would take more than just changing government to end Corruption.

He said tackling corruption needed a systematic approach and not only the belief in individual effort or good will of the political system and leadership.

“Zambians should also avoid thinking that they can solve the problem of corruption just by voting out the seemingly corrupt Politicians and voting into Office the seemingly corrupt free Politicians,” he advised.

“This illusion in thinking has been a great source of disappointment to corruption fighters and ordinary citizens not only in Zambia, but in Africa,” Tembo said.

He said all countries where people thought change of government would translate into the end of corruption had instead shown increase in corruption cases.

“Statistics about this fact is everywhere to see in Africa. Here in Zambia removing the seemingly corrupt MMD Government in 2011 and replace it with the seemingly corrupt free PF Government did not result in reduced cases of corruption,” he observed.

Tembo said Zambians must shift their corruption stance from passive participants in corruption fight to active corruption fighters.

“The long held view that Politicians will fight corruption and deliver victory to the citizens should be discarded immediately and replaced by active engagement between Politicians and the people in the fight against this problem,” he suggested.

Tembo said Zambians should not pin their hopes of fighting corruption on the political platform but redirect the focus on social measures and platforms.

He noted that “the greatest source of corruption in any given country is Society itself which supplies corrupt Politicians and Civil servants into Government”.

“Citizens should also start fighting corruption by getting rid of corruption that occurs daily at societal level. The foundation of corruption in any country is the intrasocietal corruption that takes place in our daily exchanges. Political efforts in the fight against corruption should be supported by social efforts,” suggested Tembo.
