FOLLOWING the death of Zambia’s fifth president Michael Chilufya Sata on October 28, 2014, the country held a spur-of-the-moment presidential vote on Tuesday, January 20, 2015.
Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who at the time of Sata’s death was the Minister of Justice, Minister of Defence, PF secretary general and acting Republican President, would later succeed the fascinating politician.
Many PF opinion leaders vouched for Mr Lungu as a humble person, either because of residing (way back) in a humble Lusaka ghetto, Jack, or because of his disposition (again, way back).
Whether genuinely humble or not, Mr Lungu polled 807, 925 votes (48.84 per cent), against his closest rival, UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema who got 780, 168 votes (47.16 per cent).
Simple arithmetic would show anybody that the duo was separated by a difference of 27, 757 votes.
On the simple majority rule, Mr Lungu was sworn-in as Zambia’s sixth President at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka on Sunday, January 25, 2015. He was 59.
There was another election, this time a general one, on Thursday, August 11, 2016.
President Lungu was re-elected with 1, 860, 877 votes (50.35 per cent), against Hichilema’s 1, 760, 347 votes (47.63 per cent).
That is a difference of 100, 530 votes. The latter disputed the result and sought legal intervention.
The Constitutional Court of Zambia, however, dismissed Hichilema’s presidential petition on a technicality on September 5, 2016.
President Lungu was, for second time, sworn-in on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at the venue for his first inauguration.
Over the past six years, President Lungu has spearheaded development in Zambia, ranging from roads development, construction of schools and health facilities, airports and has been evangelising about the ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ motto – at least going by the preamble of all ZNBC radio and TV main news bulletins.
Today, Monday, January 25, 2021, he turns exactly six years (2, 193 days) as the President of Zambia.
