The Electoral Commission of Zambia ECZ has extended the voter registration process by four more days.
The extension will run from Thursday December 17, to Sunday December 20, 2020.
The commission says it has so far registered 6.4 million voters and has revised its target downwards to 8.4 million voters according to latest data provided by the Zambia Statistics Agency which is 600,000 short of the commission’s earlier target of registering 9 million voters.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshindano who announced the development at a media briefing this afternoon said the extension has also been extended to correctional facilities where 11,359 voters have been registered against the targeted 16,000.
Nshindano said the registered voters so far represents a 76.1% of the 8.4 million eligible voters and has urged people to take advantage of the extension period and register as there will be no further extension after Sunday because all considerations have been made and there is no need to further eat into the elections calendar which is tight.
