VINCENT Banda has been elected to lead
African and Indian Ocean Islands (AFI-Group) accredited to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Banda is the Permanent Representative of Zambia and Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) on the ICAO Council who was recently elected as the third vice-president of the ICAO Council was elected to head the AFI-Group as Coordinator after a heavily contested that was held on 22 November 2020 in Montreal, Canada.
The AFI-Group is composed of all Permanent Representatives and Alternate Representatives from Africa and Indian Ocean Islands accredited to ICAO headquarters.
The AFI-Group is a team of aviation experts whose objective is to enhance:
• States Assistance and awareness to the International Civil Aviation issues
• The effectiveness and efficiency of African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) as the specialized agency of the African Union (AU) responsible for aviation matters in Africa and Indian Ocean Island States
• The valuable contribution of Africa and Indian Ocean Islands to the development of the International Civil Aviation and elevate the level of compliance or effective implementation of the ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices. (SARPS)
• The image and good reputation of the Africa and Indian Ocean Islands in the civil aviation community.
Banda is now a member of the governing body of the African Civil Aviation Commission Bureau.
AFCAC is the specialized agency of African Union(AU) responsible for Civil Aviation matters in Africa, to facilitate cooperation and coordination among African states towards the development of integrated and sustainable Air Transport systems; and foster the implementation of ICAO SARPS and the development of harmonized rules and regulations consistent with the best international practices in Civil Aviation.
