ZAMBIANS at home and abroad have always cherished their identity by associating themselves with various insginia and songs that are associated with their country.

It therefore is of no surprise that no other song, no matter how Patriotic it is, is better known and sets out the nation’s core values of unity, love for motherland and a commitment to contribute to development clearer than the national anthem.

Infact a national anthem, in whichever country, is so important that sometimes citizens can be seen shedding tears to it’s rendition.

Take Beyonce’s rendition of the US national anthem the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ during Obama’s inauguration or the teary first Chinese astronauts statement upon returning to earth that the song the enjoyed the most during their country’s maiden lunar voyage was the Chinese national anthem!

Well, back here in Zambia, for over a month now, President Edgar Lungu through his Facebook Page has been inviting people to submit videos of them singing the national anthem.

The challenge has seen near a hundred submissions of the national anthem being sung in unique styles and in various local languages and English by both ctizens and friends of the country.

With only hours to go before competition closes and the winner is announced, it appears that the trio of Zainab, Mumtaz and Mirriam who are citizens of Kyrgz Republic are leading the park in terms of public reaction to their submission which had garnered over a thousand plus reactions.

However, their victory is not sealed as the array of submissions is so diverse that it is hard even for professional bookmakers to predict the winner with any aorta of certainty.

Take for example the Nyanja version by the oldest competitor Rachel Phiri,50 of Mtendere East or that by the youngest competitor Chikondi Phiri aged 9 or perhaps that by the Zambian twins living in Helsinki!

The church has also joined the race with Seventh Day Adventist Golden Heralds Quartet also in the race just as instrumentalists Joseph, Jack and Samuel are also strumming it out!

Digital artists such as Moses Phiri have aslo submitted their art and a statement of the national pride just as body artists like Hadasah, Kapongolo, Christabel, Felistus, among others have also submitted pictures of body paintings commemortaing the country’s independence.

So, who is going to emerge victorius by tomorrow when the competition closes, well that is the question and KALEMBA also awaits!
