THE Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB) has awarded 1, 065 student loans to first year students at Mulungushi University for the 2020/2021 academic year.
This is an increase compared to the 300 loans awarded to first year students at the same university last year.
Corporate Communications Officer Chiselwa Kawanda said from the 1, 218 applications received, 1,065 applicants were eligible, representing 87% of those awarded the loans.
Kawanda (in picture) adds that 796 were from male applicants while 422 applications were received from females, representing 65% and 35% respectively.
She revealed that the Board only received two applications from students living with disabilities.
Kawanda further statee that out of the1, 065 successful applications, one student has been awarded a 50% scholarship.
466 students have been granted 75% while 598 students have been awarded 100%.
A total of 950 students applied under the science category while 268 students applied under the non-science.
60% of the loans awarded are for science related programmes while 40% were given to those in on-science related studies.
During his address to the nation on Friday during the opening of parliament, President Edgar Lungu hailed the recovery rate of money by the loans scheme for students who earlier benefited from the fund.
Lungu noted that this is the only sustainable way of running education loans to ensure every eligible students benefits.
