FORMER republican president Rupiah Banda says Malawi has done Africa proud by the peaceful manner in which it has conducted its elections.
On Tuesday Malawians voted in a fresh election after the country’s Constitional Court annulled results of the 2019 vote saying they showed “grave”, “widespread” and “systematic” irregularities.
Dr Lazarus Chakwera of the Tonse Alliance won the vote by more than 850,000 votes to unseat Mutharika.
As the sixth President of Malawi since 1964, Dr Chakwera was was sworn-in at joyous event in Lilomgwe yesterday.
In a congratulatory letter to President Chekwera, Banda said his election was testimony of the “great trust and confidence” that the people of Malawi had in his leadership.
“It is with deep sense of elation that I send this congratulatory massage to you and through you, to all Malawians, on well your deserved victory and swearing in as the President of the Republic of Malawi,” Banda stated.
“Your excellency, you and your compatriots have done Africa proud by the peaceful manner in which you have conducted your elections,” added Banda.
Banda who ruled Zambia from 2008 to 2011 said he was encouraged by President Chakwera’s timely, conciliatory speech to all Malawians, including members of opposition political parties.
“This inclusive and uniting is a beacon of hope for a great future of Malawi and this is as it should be,” said Banda.
