THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) in partnership with the Funeral Service Providers Association of Zambia yesterday buried 34 unclaimed bodies at Chingwere cemetery.
The Funeral Service Providers Association of Zambia provided 34 free coffins for the burial.
On March 30, 2020, LCC notified the public about its intention to bury the 34 bodies following a request from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
According to the letter from UTH, the 34 unclaimed bodies had been in the mortuary for sometime, giving rise to an unpleasant mortuary environment contrary to the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia.
The bodies also caused congestion in the mortuary hence the need to bury them.
The bodies comprised of three females and 31 males.
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, only a few authorised LCC officers were assigned to conduct the burial.
This is the second time this year (2020) that the Council has unclaimed bodies bringing the total to 59.
In February this year, Lusaka City Council (LCC) in partnership with the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church, Garden Congregation of Midlands West Zambia Conference in Mandevu Mission District, have buried 25 unclaimed bodies at Chingwere cemetery.
“LCC wishes to thank the Funeral Service Providers Association of Zambia for the gesture of Corporate Social Responsibility,” the council stated.
“The Council hopes that other organizations will the gesture by the SDA church and the Funeral Service Providers Association of Zambia who have so far partnered with the local authority in providing this particular service.”
