KALABA village in Northen Province’s Lupososhi district has recorded 135 cases of scabies since December 2022.

The most affected in the area are children between the age of three to 12 years old.

Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin.

The main symptom of scabies is intense itching that eventually becomes worse at night.

It also causes a skin rash on areas where the mites have burrowed.

The itching is caused by the body’s allergic reaction to the mites, their eggs and their waste.

Kalaba community health post community health assistant Christopher Kalembe told Kalemba that the health post is recording at least 14 cases of scabies daily from children.

Kalembe attributed the spread of scabies in the area mostly due to children exchanging clothes and also socialisation.

“We are doing senstisation in the community to ensure that parents, especially, are aware of what causes scabies and how it can be prevented,” said Kalembe.

It has been medically proven that close skin-to-skin contact and less often, sharing clothing or beddings with a person who has scabies can spread the mites.

Meanwhile, Kalaba clinic clinical officer in charge Joseph Luhanga says there is lack of medication at the health centre to treat the disease.

Scabies can take up to eight weeks for the symptoms to appear after the initial infection (incubation period).

Recently, Northern provincial health director for Dr Ernest Mutale said scabies is currently affecting Nsama, Lunte and Lupososhi districts in Northern Province.
