A CLERGYMAN has expressed shock that police officers are whipping church goers as the country works to curb further spread of the Coronavirus.
Agape Church of God overseer, Reverend Jimmy Kasabwa feels police and other government agencies have over stepped their boundaries on churches.
Reverend Kasabwa has been quoted by Radio Phoenix saying when President Edgar Lungu did not ban churches from congregating provided only 50 people attended the service which should not last for an hour while observing social distance among other health guidelines.
The clergyman has since appealed to all civic leaders, local authorities and the police to refrain from embarrassing the church because such acts were not befitting Zambia.
Reverend Kasabwa however commended government for the positive measures taken in bring sanity in the country in the midst of COVID-19.
Over the weekend, some congregants from various churches were beaten by police after they were found congregating without proper personal protective equipment.
Zambia has so far recorded 45 cases of COVID-19 with two deaths.
Since breaking out last December, the Coronavirus has infected close to two million people and claimed more than 100,000 lives worldwide.
To curb the spread of the Coronavirus in Zambia, last Thursday President Lungu extended announced the extension of closure of bars, casinos, gyms and cinemas for another two weeks.
For essential gatherings such as weddings, church congregations and workshops, President Lungu said only 50 people should be in attendance and the duration should not exceed an hour.
