Chilufya gets appointment to sit on AU COVID-19 response team

HEALTH minister Dr Chitalu Chilufya has been appointed to sit on the coordinating committee for the African Union Continental Response to COVID-19.

Announcing the appointment, ministry of health permanent secretary for technical services Dr Kennedy Malama said the appointment of Dr Chilufya would escalate further Zambia’s response to COVID-19.

He said the coordinating committee would ensure that Africa continues on its trajectory of heighten preparedness of prevention and disease intelligence in responding to COVID-19.

Dr Malama said the committee would also ensure that Africa mobilizes enough resources to procure equipment and necessary supply in the fight against the coronavirus.

The committee would be chaired by the African Union commissioner  for social affairs chairperson Mrs Amira Elfadil and the South African minister of health.

“Africa has a continent continues working as a collective in solidarity, not only for the continent but also in line with global response. Today, Zambia has received information that the African union has constituted which is being called the coordinating committee for the African Union Continental Response to COVID-19. This committee for Zambia includes our honorable Minister of Health Dr Chitalu Chilufya, MP. The appointment of honorable minister to this continental committee to coordinate the COVID-19 response is the key appreciation of the Zambia’s leadership.”

More than 55,000 people have died from COVID-19 globally and over 1million people infected.

Zambia has recorded 39 confirmed cases with one death and only two have recovered so far.
