THOSE who think they have the green light for smoking marijuana could find themselves weeded out of society and behind bars because legalisation of the drug is for export and medicinal purposes only.
The Zambia Daily Mail reports that President Edgar Lungu has since directed relevant ministries to sensitise the public that smoking marijuana is still illegal.
The President said legalisation of marijuana for medicinal and commercial purposes does not give people the green light to abuse the drug.
He was speaking to journalists at Zambia Air Force Base yesterday on return from Livingstone where he went for a three-day working visit.
“Smoking cannabis is still an offence. It remains an offence. I hope the ministries responsible will clarify the situation as to why we have legalised marijuana for medical and commercial purposes. Legalisation of the drug does not entail abusing it, I think there is need for clarification of the matter, President Lungu said.
Last Wednesday, Cabinet approved the cultivation, processing and export of cannabis for economic and medicinal purposes.
