What Is Prayer? …Making Your Life Count with Dr. Humphrey Mutiti

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in a time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)
Prayer is the highest calling above every calling. The call to prayer is the Father’s invitation to enter into His presence.
It is the Father’s invitation into the throne room. Prayer is a tool and a weapon, which is available to anyone in Christ; in prayer we discover the authority of the Name of Jesus and how to use it.
Prayer is an opportunity to fellowship and commune with God. Your prayer life creates intimacy with God.
During these times, you have the opportunity to pour out your heart to God and God also has the opportunity to reveal His plans and purposes to you.
Prayer is a time when divinity meets with humanity for the fulfillment of divine purposes. “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great mighty things, which thou knowest not.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
Prayer gives you a revelation of who God is and releases the keys of the Kingdom to you.
Peter gets a revelation from the Father of who Christ is and the Lord releases the keys to the kingdom. “And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and asked them, saying, whom say the people that I am? They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias, and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. He said unto them, but whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, the Christ of God.” (Luke 9:18-20)
An extended version of this interaction is in Matthew 16:16-19.”
“And Simon Peter answered and said unto him, thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.”
And I say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Jesus was praying for the disciples in Luke 9:18 after a great miracle had been performed. The miracle of the fish and loaves was a benchmark in the life of the disciples; because they had for the first time, not just been observers of the Kingdom, but had directly participated in the miracle of the fish and loaves. Jesus in praying, asked the Father to give them illumination.
Peter responded and identified correctly the revelation of who Christ is. This was the revelation Jesus said He would use to build His Church. The prayers of Jesus gave Peter access to the throne room to receive revelation from the Father about who Jesus was.
After Peter received the Revelation, Jesus gave him the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven to bind and to loose.
The keys to bind and loose are very important in intercession. Keys stand for revelation and it enables you to know what to bind and loose in prayer. You must have revelation of the ordinances of Heaven for you to have dominion on Earth.
You have to know what is bound in Heaven and what is loosed in Heaven so that you can walk in dominion. “Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? Canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?” (Job 38:32).
There is power in revelation. Revelation enables you to know what Heaven has already determined concerning issues and matters of the Earth, and the revelation gives you the tenacity to walk in dominion on Earth. This is why prayer must be executed, so that what is written in the volume of the books concerning you, your family, your church, and your nation can be enforced.
In conclusion, prayer is a guided missile. Prayer transcends boundaries and knows no limits. Prayer overrides the enemy and it exposes his agenda. It is in the place of prayer that the will of God is enforced and that His Kingdom is made manifest on earth and among men.
That is why, in Luke 11:2, Jesus instructs us pray that “Thy Kingdom Come and let Thy will be done.” He didn’t say preach, sing, build houses, build mega churches, or buy private jets that Thy Kingdom Come; He said pray that Thy Kingdom Come.
