Police capture gassing coordinator

POLICE in Ndola have arrested a man they believe has been key in coordinating the ongoing gas attacks in the country, according to Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo. The minister told journalists at a media briefing in Lusaka today that information gathered by police was directly connecting the arrested man to the gassing activities.
Kampyongo expressed hope that “something positive would come out.”
He said so far, two of the 26 arrested gassing suspects namely Brian Maipambe and Lazarus Mwape were appearing in court and had been charged under the anti-terrorism act.
The two are also facing murder charges.
Last Saturday, Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja said a suspect believed to be a conduit through which the funds to facilitate the gassing attacks were received had been arrested along with 15 other people connected to the crime.
Police then announced the arrest of mine more suspects on Monday.
Gassing attacks first appeared in Chingola on the Copperbelt over a month ago before spreading to other parts of the country.
After arriving in Lusaka, residents responded to the gas attacks with riots and killing suspects through mobs.
The mob killings were quickly emulated in other parts of the country resulting in the gruesome murders of close to 50 people and 23 injuries.
