ZAMBIA Sugar Country Managing Director, Oswald Magwenzi, says the institution remains committed in preserving the environment by adapting to sustainable practices.
Magwenzi notes that in the area of waste, the company has pledged to throw away less, stating that through this effort, Zambia Sugar has managed to divert over 80% of its total waste from landfill to productive use.
He explains that the institution is focussing on separating recyclable materials such as paper and plastics, making them into valuable resource to minimise negative environmental impacts.
Magwenzi states that Zambia Sugar also converts waste from the company’s sugar production process to energy as is the case with Bagasse.
He adds that waste is also converted to fertilizer by compositing mill organics for re-use in sugar-cane fields as manure.
Magwenzi reveals that Zambia Sugar works with other organisations in turning waste to other recyclable products.
The Managing Director also says that Zambia Sugar is very passionate about Tree planting in an effort to rebuild forests, which provides homes to millions of species.
Magwenzi elaborates that trees also serve as a carbon dioxide sink to reduce the effects of global warming and henceforth minimize climate change.
This was in a speech read on Magwenzi’s behalf by Agriculture Head Anthony Domleo during the 5th June commemoration of World Environment Day under the theme “Beating Plastic Pollution.’
