FIRST things first; the surroundings were dry. One could tell from a distance that the nearby trees, which are yet to be subjected to the wrath of an axe by locals, are yearning for water. And the pitch had enough dust for everyone present to swallow.
That’s the condition under which two Rufunsa-based football clubs, SuperSport and Riverside competed in an Africa Climate Week final match at Nyangwena Combined School ground on Saturday afternoon.
The match was strategically used to raise awareness around climate change and its socio-economic effects.
The charming spectators included cheering locals, chickens and scores of cattle. Yes, village chickens and cattle. A bit later about that, nonetheless.
For a moment, forget about SuperSport United FC of Pretoria, South Africa and visualise the SuperSport Football Club of Rufunsa district, Lusaka Province.
The match was organised by Edutainment Foundation as a HIVOs partner with the support of other stakeholders like Kalemba, Free Press Initiative (FPI) Zambia, Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) Civil Society Organisation – Scaling Up Nutrition (CSO-SUN) and others, as part of commemorative events for the Africa Climate Week, which ran from August 29, 2022 to September 3, 2022.
Hivos and its named partners, under the banner of Voices for Just Climate Action (VCA) Zambia, is advocating for local solutions of countering climate change.
The Africa Climate Week ran under the theme “driving green, fair and resilient climate transitions.”
Like typical victims of climate change, the football players from both sides thumped their hard feet, some shoeless, on the hard earth and sweated out their village Vatra, in order to win a copper coated trophy.
The trophy was paraded in front of Rufunsa council chairperson Kennedy Mailoni, Rufunsa Constituency’s Nyangwena ward councillor Jameson Chalimbwa, VCA Zambia representatives and some village elders who have seen enough bliss and gloom of life.
On the field of play, a middle-aged man, armed with an average phone for a watch, ran around as the referee.
For any slight error, real or imagined, hundreds of spectators on the touchline would chorus into cursing him, his relatives, yet-to-be born grandchildren, plates, his pets and whatever else they thought deserved their insults.
Some village chickens from nearby homes, maybe the teachers’ compound, stupidly went about on the pitch, picking whatever they could feed on.
As if to increase the fan-base at this soccer arena, a huge herd of cattle marched towards the pitch.
But a group of beautiful ladies, who were noisily cheering Riverside, while throwing kicks in the air, barred the ZAMBEEF raw materials from freely crossing the pitch.
The match continued and the not-so-bad to look at ladies, in their skirts, equally continued kicking the air.
There was enough to watch on the day!
Coaches of either side were loudly backing out instructions to their players, though their word commanded little respect.
At one point, for instance, the coach for SuperSport had substituted a player but one village bully, looking sinful like those silenced PF cadres, screamed against the idea, and it was instantly reversed.
Actually, one creative player on the pitch was being addressed as Mbappe by the locals. Of course, that is ‘impersonation’ that can’t make PSG striker Kylian Mbappe to lose sleep.
Due to the intensity of the match, dust from the pitch hovered and everyone on the terraces swallowed their fair share.
In the meantime, a few cases of Fruticana, Vatra mineral water and a box of Joe biscuits were on the touchline, waiting to be destroyed by players at a convenient time.
While everyone was focused on the ‘football stars’ on the pitch and the cheering ladies, a few metres away, some young and wonderful girls were mindlessly playing on a circle swing, happy and carefree, like mountain monkeys.
In the end, it was Riverside who lifted the trophy after beating SuperSport 4 – 3 on post-match penalties.
The game ended goalless in regulation time.
Edutainment Foundation project officer Michael Mwansa said the match was important as it was a means for reaching out to the masses to sensitise them on climate change.
For councillor Chalimbwa, charcoal burning is rampant in Rufunsa and that the trend has to be reversed.
Meanwhile, Mailoni, the council chairperson, commended VCA Zambia partners for going into the district to talk about matters of climate change.
