THE government says it welcomes the launch of the Zambezi Source Restoration Project, an intervention meant to secure the source of the Zambezi River in North-Western Province.
Addressing the media and stakeholders at the launch of the project, green economy and environment minister Collins Nzovu said the government was excited with the development.
“I am honoured and privileged to officiate at this launch of the Zambezi Source Restoration Project dubbed: ‘Let’s secure Zambezi’. I feel this is the beginning of one of the most important project as I have in my possession an invitation to a landmark event in Ikelenge district at the Zambezi source later this month. As the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, and indeed as the government, we are excited about this development,” Nzovu said.
The project is being jointly implemented by Stanbic Bank Zambia and Worldwide Fund for nature (WWF) Zambia in collaboration with the Zambian government through the Forestry Department and National Heritage Conservation Commission (NHCC) as custodians of the Zambezi source area.
Nzovu said the project launch was an important occasion that demonstrates the desire for Stanbic Bank Zambia and WWF Zambia to support government in sustainable forest management.
He further said it was important to secure the Zambezi source area, one of the seven major river basins in the country, because numerous people in Zambia depend on it.
“If the source is not protected, waterfalls, wildlife habitats, heritage sites, major fisheries sources and irrigation will be at a greater risk. Therefore, this means the Zambezi source is very important to the environmental, social and economic development of Zambia,” said Nzovu.
He further said according to the NHCC, increasing levels of deforestation and overall environmental degradation have been reported in the Zambezi headwaters and associated woodlands over the past decade.
