CHEFS and shawarma makers across Zambia are currently mourning the nationwide shortage of garlic and ginger.
In response, the country has begun importing these essential commodities from China and Tanzania.
Bernard Sikunyongana, president of the Zambia Fruits and Vegetable Traders Association (ZFVA), shared this update with the Times of Zambia.
Sikunyongana noted that the shortage has led to increased prices for garlic and ginger, particularly compared to other essential items.
He attributed the scarcity to the drought affecting the country.
“We are experiencing a shortage of garlic and ginger, resulting in higher prices for these commodities due to the ongoing drought,” he stated.
To address the demand, some vegetable farmers are turning to irrigation farming to cultivate garlic and ginger.
“While there is a shortage of garlic and ginger, the supply and pricing for fruits and other vegetables, like tomatoes and onions, have remained stable,” Sikunyongana added.
