Consumers want subsidies introduced to chicken production inputs

Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) Executive Secretary, Juba Sakala has appealed to government to consider putting up subsidies on inputs used in the production of chicken so as to assist consumers to afford a meal and the producers to stay in business.

Sakala’s comment comes after chicken producers recorded a price increase of day-old chicks last week.

The day-old chicks are now selling at K15 per chick from K13 of which the price adjustment has been attributed to unstable and high prices in stockfeed and fuel.

Sakala added that Government needs to intervene or else the poultry business will decline and the consumer won’t be able to afford the nutritious bird which is mostly cheaper compared to beef.
